How being an Instructor lifts quality of life – yours and others!
I never forget this day in Greece several years ago. I was booked to a fitness camp to present Dancess – in those days called nicadance. A lady in her fifties catched my attention. Her body was extremely fit, skinny and there were nearly only muscles and bones to see. Her body told me she’s very used to do a lot of sports. But it must have been kinda different stuff than dance cause she obviously felt shy and unsecure that moment she came to my class. (As she told me years later, she used to do extreme challenges like triathlon, running trough the dessert and stuff like this I already nearly die if I’m just thinking about it.) I smiled at her and I said to her and the rest of my class what I always say: The only thing you can do wrong is to give up to early! We started to dance and she stayed the whole class.
From this day on, she came to all my classes during this fitness camp. Furthermore back at home she was in all my classes and became one of the most loyals and fast growing students I ever had. Her body changed completely. Not the structure, the way it looks – she stayed very skinny and fit. But the way that she moved her body was from another world now.
She became way more selfconfident and female in her movements and attitude and started to light from the inside out.
I could see that – and everyone else too. But the most important thing: She felt the change by herself! Many years after that day in Greece she came to me with tears in her eyes and said to me: Nicole, you have no idea what you did to me and my life. You have no idea. Thank you.
As you know Industry ain’t easy. And I often felt like living in the wrong movie. But moments like this kept me going trough all this years. People like this Lady gave me the power to go my path. So she didn’t just change herself to a better version of herself. She helped me to be me as well. And all I did for this was to empower her to dance. Again and again, when she was doubting. To be brave to step out of her comfort zone and to discover her true self while having fun and a great workout. The result she made out of it – priceless. For her and myself as well.
I experienced as an Instructor you can learn a lot about yourself, others and human situations. I learned for life! And I guess the following 5 steps are the key how everyone can be grated with these experiences and move to grow. The following 5 Steps are very important if you wanna grow yourself and others.
5 Steps for making your classes matter
Go for the right Mindset
Don’t be interesting. Be interested. I’ve seen many Instructors acting like little Divas. Thinking cause they are the ones standing in the front (and on a stage), they are kinda pop stars. Let me tell you: This won’t last long. Clients won’t feel comfy with you. In the beginning they might give you admiration. But attention is a bitch. It won’t last. Go for the real shit: Respect and Confidence. You gonna earn it both with an authentic and caring mindset and behavior.
Go for Education
Move2grow – never stop challenging yourself. Your clients – specially in the beginning – need a lot of braveness to start workout with you. It’s a huge step out of their comfort zone. You need to know how it feels to be lost outside this comfy zone. Only then you understand how to support them to keep going. To be a beginner on and on makes you humble, keeps you going and will make you the better you. Never stop to go for education. Keep up to date and strengthen your professional skills in Fitness, Psychology and Braingym.
Walk the Talk
Exclamation Mark -Exclamation Mark! Don’t just do blabla. Walk the blabla! If you wanna be a REAL Role Model for your clients you need to get credibility. You earn it while doing what you are saying. You are telling them to step out of the comfort zone? So do you! You are telling how important it is to workout frequentely – work it baby! You gonna honored with a great feeling for yourself and got their credibility as a cherry on the top.
Go for Community
Don’t be afraid of competitors. If you are just yourself you are out of any competition! If you are keep going to be the BEST VERSION of yourself you don’t need to be afraid anyway! And let me tell you: Team up! Built your local Community it will make your life so much more colorful and it will make it so much easier! You easily got feedback (feedback is king!) if you need one, you have more (wo)manpower to realize amazing happenings for your clients and you have a better backup if you are sick, in holidays or just need a day off.
Be real
Don’t behave. Be! Don’t try to be perfect. You won’t (sorry for the bad news – but wait – actually it’s a good one!). Always try to become a better version of you. Being a Role Model doesn’t mean to be perfect. Perfect people are like Robots. They are fascinating in one hand but scary on the other hand. Pretending to be perfect will make you untouchable. People won’t find a way trough your mask to you. That’s a pity and bad for bonding a strong customer relationship. Be brave to be vulnerable. Be crazy enough to be you. And inspire your clients to follow you.
